You've always seen it in the ski movies, the aspirational shots of being heli-dropped onto a remote mountaintop with your skis and friends in tow and many feet of deep pow to be skied. This dream is more attainable than you might think, and our friends at Canadian Mountain Holidays are going to be at the shop this Thursday 11/7 to talk all things Heli-skiing and get us excited for the upcoming season.
We were able to catch up with CMH guide Robert Koell, who will be here on Thursday to give you a little taste of what to expect.
Born in Matrei in Osttirol Austria, Jan.-09 1963.
I was born and grew up on a mountain farm in the Winters and a high alpine hut in the summers near the Austrian Dolomites in the Grossglockner mountain range in the eastern part of Tyrol.
Mountain and Ski Guiding supported my family since 4 generations, and is my passion and profession today. I ski raced as a kid and youth until a crash ended my ski racing carrier.
In the summers I had my own Mountaineering School and guided all over Europe's West and Eastern Alps, and was very involved with the Mountain Rescue Team of the region.
In the winters I managed a Ski shool in my hometown, coached alpine ski racing first at club level and later with the Austrian National Ski Team, until I followed the dream to explore, ski and climb mountains internationally.
I hired on to work as Heli-Ski and mountain guide with CMH in 1989, over the years I have made it one of my focuses to developed the CMH Powder Performance Program, an introductory program for novice powder skiers.
