Our Process

Choosing Ready-Made or Custom Skis

These skis are the right choice if you already know what type of ski you are looking for: an all-mountain ski for groomers, a frontside carver, something snappy that works on trails and in the trees or a powder ski. The ready made line up includes our four most popular models that come in several lengths with stock graphics and standard specs. They are made to order with Parlor's high quality materials and detailed craftsmanship and are typically ready for snow in 2 weeks.

Custom Skis

Custom skis are our most popular option. Having custom skis built for you (or as a gift) is a highly personalized experience that includes a fitting and topsheet design. Each custom ski order includes a fitting with founder, Mark Wallace via phone or in person to lay out specs and a design process between you and one of Parlor's graphic artists to create your top sheets.  The skis are build to your specs and delivered within 2-4 weeks. If you are local, we also encourage you to come tour the Shop and have a beer with us!

Black Label

This is the ultimate bespoke experience. For clients with specific technical needs, the Black Label fit process explores a fully custom outline, camber profile and materials to create a truly one of kind ski. You will also receive a rendering of the profile you design as a keepsake.

The Custom Process

The Fitting

The Parlor fitting is as much personal as it is technical. It is as much a conversation about getting to know you, as a detailed questionnaire. We start by honing in on what you are looking to get out of your skis, where you ski, your favorite runs, or ideal day. From there we'll talk about your style of skiing and how you want the ski to perform.

Every fitting is different and we always drill down to the details that matter to you whether it is an improvement you'd like to make in your skiing, or a specific performance you want from the ski based on profile and materials. Once we've completed this step, we feel confident that the ski we build for you is going to meet your needs perfectly.

Designing Your Top Sheets

Creating your own custom topsheets with a Parlor designer is the ultimate way to blend your personal aesthetic with the performance of your ski. We pair you with one of our designers, based on a loose or detailed description of what you want your skis to look like. They work with you via phone/email to develop a concept and then send you a few drafts for feedback. Together you refine the look until it's perfect! We include 2.5 hours of design time in the price of the skis and this usually does the trick. Additional design time is be billed hourly if needed. For inspiration, check out the Parlor gallery.

The Build

Once your topsheets are approved, your skis are ready to be built. This is where your aesthetic meets our high quality materials and craftsmanship. First the bases, cores and graphics are collected and shaped. The skis are then laid up using a Green Poxy Resin and Vectorply Triaxial fiberglass before being put into the press. Once out of the press, we do the final edging and shaping. Every pair of skis is then hand tuned and waxed.

The Final Stage

Prepping, Bindings, Pick Up & Shipping

Your skis are delivered to you with edges prepped, tuned and bases waxed — ready for summer storage or snow! If you live locally and would like to bring in a boot and purchase bindings from us, we'll mount them for you and offer you a beer while you wait.

*We are also happy to ship the skis flat anywhere in the US. For international shipments, we charge the cost to ship.

*Note that because we are not a retail shop, we do not carry a complete line of bindings. We carry Look Pivot bindings as an option for our clients and are only able to mount the ones we sell. We are more than happy to recommend other bindings and/or ship skis flat to your local ski shop.

Answers to Your Other Burning Questions

How do I place an order?

You can order Ready Made Skis directly through the website. We review every order if we have any questions we will reach out to you. Once we're all set, your skis will be built. The lead time is 2-3 weeks.

You can order Custom and Black Label Skis directly through the website as well.  As soon as your order is placed, we will reach out to you to start the fitting process and take it from there. A custom ski build should take 3-4 weeks.

If your preference is to call us or set up a time to visit to the Shop, that works too. Our goal is for you to have a great buying experience and enjoy the process as much as we do.

Can I try them first?

We have a permanent demo fleet at Spruce Creek at Stowe Mountain, VT and Wachusett Mountain in MA, and an additional demo fleet that is on the road all winter! See the events page for On-Snow Demo Tour dates.

If you want to demo during the week, you can pick up skis at our shop in East Boston! We charge $50 for the weekend and deduct the cost when you place an order.

What if I buy skis and don't like them?

We take them back, give you your money back and go ski on them ourselves!

Can I come see the Shop?

We run Shop Nights every other Wednesday all winter long. Sign up to come by and have a cold one and get a snap shot of what it takes to build a pair of skis.

Do you really build everything in house?

Graphics to grinding, it all happens in Eastie.

Can I give them as a gift?

You can, and many do! Parlors, or the Parlor Build Class are very popular gifts. Buy a gift card here, and of course give us a call if you have any questions.

Can I build them myself?

Check out the Build Class webpage for all the details about our popular off-season ski building workshops right here in Eastie.

These classes are a great gift, an opportunity to share an experience with a friend, or to do something yourself. The are more than 250 skiers from all over the US and as far away as Norway and Austria, who can proudly say that they made their own Parlors.

As the most established ski building school of its kind in North America, the Build Class continues to attract attention, and with that, it fills up and sells out! The schedule runs from April to August, offering weekend, weekday and evening options.

Look for the 2020 schedule to be released in mid-January. We do book private building events for 2-4 people based on our availability (which can be limited). Oh and yes, of course you can also build a snowboard!
